IALD Elects New Board of Directors

The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) announced the election of five new members to the 2005 Board of Directors and two new membership committee members.

  • Graham Phoenix, IALD, of PhoenixLarge/lightmatters in London, England, is President Elect
  • Jeffrey Miller, IALD, of Pivotal Lighting Design in Seattle, Washington, is Director of External Affairs
  • Larry French, IALD, of Auerbach•Glasow in San Francisco, California is Director of Membership
  • Mary Rushton Beales, IALD, of Lighting Design House in Middlesex, England, is Director of Education
  • Julie Blankenheim, LC, of Lighting Design Alliance in Chicago, Illinois, is Director at Large

Additionally, two members were elected to serve on the five-member membership committee. They are Dawn Hollingsworth, IALD, of Visual Terrain in Los Angeles, California and Michael K. Souter, IALD, of Luminae Souter in San Francisco, California.

Phoenix holds a degree in Mathematics and Systems and a National Certificate in Lighting. He formed Phoenix/lightmatters consultancy in 2000 after 15 years in theatre as a production electrician and lighting designer and 13 years at the Lighting Design Partnership in Edinburgh.

Miller has spent 25 years practicing lighting design, beginning as a theatrical designer in New York City, then a project designer with Jules Horton, FIALD, in private practices in Seattle and Hong Kong, director of lighting design for NBBJ and currently director of Pivotal, the lighting design studio of Affiliated Engineers.

French has been in architectural lighting design for 16 years and worked for 15 years as a theatrical lighting designer with many of the top theatrical companies in the US and abroad. He has served four consecutive terms on the membership committee and is chair of the ethics committee.

Rushton-Beales founded Lighting Design House in 1990 after experience with the lighting division of business services consultants and early design experience with Philips. She teaches degree-level design classes and was recently the regional coordinator for the UK.

Blankenheim joined the Lighting Design Alliance in 1997 as an intern and has progressed to senior level designer in LDA's Chicago office. She has served as Scholarship Chair for the IALD Education Trust, has won four IIDA awards, and is LC certified by the NCQLP.

To fill the vacancy on the membership committee created by Graham Phoenix's election to President-Elect, IALD President Charles G. Stone has named Ulrike Brandi, IALD, of Ulrike Brandi Licht in Hamburg, Germany, to carry out the remaining year of Phoenix's term.
