The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) awarded eight lighting design projects with prestigious IALD recognition for their outstanding and innovative lighting solutions during its 21st Annual IALD Awards Presentation held on April 1 in Las Vegas.
At this year’s judging, the IALD awarded eight projects that represented five of the seven categories. Four projects earned IALD Awards of Merit, one in the academic/institutional category, two in retail/entertainment and one in corporate. Three IALD Awards of Excellence were earned: one in corporate; one in site/façade; and one in monumental structures/public spaces. Overall, the selected winners were chosen based on their aesthetic value and appropriate integration of the most effective and advanced lighting techniques. Winning designs were also recognized for incorporating low-energy lighting solutions with designs achieving high-levels of sustainability.
The IALD bestowed one Radiance Award, three Awards of Excellence, four Awards of Merit, and one Special Citation. IALD’s highest honor, the Radiance Award, was presented to Award of Excellence winner J.K. Yao of Architectural Lighting Design located in Taipei, Taiwan for his work on the CKS International Airport, Terminal 1 Lighting Renovation, located in Tao-Yuan, Taiwan. The IALD gives this award to the project earning the highest point score among winners. This project demanded the lighting designer include a new ceiling plan, and required construction to take place among normal ticketing/check-in routines.
Two IALD Awards of Excellence were presented for Post Tower in Bonn, Germany, and the MetLife Building in New York. The Post Tower was designed by Michael F. Rohde, Raik Kaczmarek, Nadia Kugler, Nils von Leesen, and Andreas Voigt of L-Plan Lighting Design in Berlin, Germany. The Met Life Building was designed by Scott J. Hershman and Charles G. Stone II of Fisher Marantz Stone in New York, NY.
Four IALD Awards of Merit were presented for: Brown Fine Arts Center at Smith College in Northampton, MA (Francesca Bettridge and Marty Salzburg of Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design in New York, NY); the BMW Group Autocenter in Munich, Germany (Gerd Pfarré of Lichtplanung in Munich, Germany); Finsbury Avenue Square in London, UK(Mark Ridler, Rob Honeywill, Kevin Theobald, and Petra Kleegraefe of Maurice Brill Lighting Design Ltd. of London); and the Galleria Mall Renovation and Expansion in Houston, TX(Alfred R. Borden, IV, IALD, and Gail Beck of The Lighting Practice in Philadelphia).One Special Citation for passive daylighting was awarded to the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, TX (Brian Stacy, Andrew Sedgwick, Florence Lam and Matt Franks of Arup Lighting in New York).
The IALD Lighting Design Awards program, established in 1983, honors lighting projects that display high aesthetic achievement backed by technical expertise. IALD entries are submitted into one of seven categories: Academic/Institutional; Corporate; Hospitality; Monumental Structures/Public Spaces; Residential; Retail/Entertainment; and Site/Façade. A panel of award-winning lighting designers and architects review the projects.
This year, the IALD received 133 submissions from 11 countries. The IALD, established in 1969, is an international organization dedicated to the profession of architectural lighting design. Based in Chicago and comprised of over 700 members throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, the IALD’s role is to set the global standard for lighting design excellence.
