Dr. Forrest Newlin Dies; Theatre Educator was 64

Forrest A. Newlin

, chairman of the Texas Christian University Theatre Department, died Monday, December 16, 2002 after a short illness. He was 64.

Dr. Newlin spent most of his professional life as a college and university teacher along with work in commercial theatre whenever time and energy would permit. Dr. Newlin was an educator with over 40 years and was very active in the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT.) A memorial service was held for Dr. Newlin at the Carr Chapel on the Texas Christian University campus on Wednesday, December 18th.

Dr. Newlin was born Oct. 16, 1938, in Emporia, Kansas. Pursuing his theatrical design career in scenic, lighting, and costume design included professorships with Idaho State University in Pocatello, Emporia State University, The University of Nebraska at Lincoln, Southern Methodist University, Texas Tech University, and The University of Oklahoma. He joined Texas Christian University in 1993 as the chairman of Theater. Dr. Newlin was on the board of directors of Stage West in Fort Worth. He served as a Fulbright Scholar at the National Institute for the Arts, Taipei, Taiwan, and supported many international exchange programs with Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, Mexico City, Theatre Koleso, Toggletti, Russia, and the Texas Christian University London Center. Dr. Newlin was proud of his many former students and their accomplishments in the theatre.
