Derek Barnwell Joins Available Light

Derek Barnwell has joined lighting design firm Available Light as senior associate/project manager. Barnwell will be based at the company’s Boston office.

"My new position at Available Light draws completely on my diverse career in the lighting industry–from designing road tours in the music business to museum exhibits in Washington," Derek says, "this new challenge, with all the wonderful prospects, is a dream come true."

Barnwell has more than 15 years experience designing lighting systems for museums, architecture, and entertainment. While a member of the Media Systems Division at Design & Production in Lorton VA, Barnwell was responsible for all aspects of lighting design and show control implementation for many projects including: SportsWorks at the Carnegie Science Center, The National Guard Museum, Boomers and Fast Attack Submarines at the National Museum of American History, The US Naval Academy Museum/Proeble Hall in Annapolis, and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Boston-area hospitality architectural lighting designs include Lot 401, The Roxy, 180 Lounge, Bell-n-Hand, and Bamboo. Other career highlights include years of working the entertainment lighting circuit, from Madison Square Garden to BAM in New York City.

Having also served the architectural lighting industry from the manufacturer’s side–first as a software/marketing specialist for several lighting companies and then as a manufacturer’s representative–Barnwell possesses a profound understanding and appreciation for lighting and architecture from many perspectives: creative, technical, and logistical.

"Derek and I have been friends and colleagues for years," says Steven Rosen, IALD, founding principal, "This is a fantastic opportunity to continue growing our firm while continuing to give our clients the best of the best lighting design talent."
