Dante Ferretti Goes Gangbusters

Production designer Dante Ferretti, whose 19th-century Manhattan sets for Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York were glimpsed last weekend in a 20-minute preview reel at the Cannes Film Festival, will be honored in fall 2002 with an exhibition of his work at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences' Beverly Hills museum. Italy's Cinecitta International will partner with the Academy on the career retrospective, it was announced yesterday in Cannes.

The exhibition is scheduled to run Oct. 24-Jan. 5, and will include the designer's sketches and set models from such films as Federico Fellini's And the Ship Sails On, Terry Gilliam's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Neil Jordan's Interview With the Vampire, Julie Taymor's Titus, and Scorsese's Kundun and Gangs, which was shot on Cinecitta's backlot in Rome. Ferretti's costumes for Kundun will also be featured, and interactive graphic installations are being produced in Italy for the exhibition. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art will also get into the act, screening film clips of the designer's work Oct. 25 and 26.
