THEATRE: My Fair Lady
After his around-the-world sailing sabbatical, David Hersey has roared back onto the London scene by designing the lighting for the Royal National Theatre’s standing-room-only revival of Lerner & Loewe’s 1956 musical My Fair Lady, which transfers to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the West End in July. Hersey’s lighting rig includes Vari*Lite® VL7™ and VL6™ automated luminaries, ETC Source Fours, Rainbow color scrollers, a Strand 500 series console, DHA Digital Light Curtains, and a new DHA gobo effect designed especially for this production. Trevor Nunn directs; sets and costumes are by Anthony Ward; choreography by Matthew Bourne. Ellen Lampert-Gréaux reports.

TV: Farscape
Journey to Sydney, where DP Russell Bacon and rigging gaffer Steve Johnson toil on the Sci-Fi Channel's most popular series. Instruments for their weekly intergalactic voyages are drawn from Arri, Mole-Richardson, and Panavision, and, for added visual flair, from Martin Professional, Clay Paky, and Studio Due (controlled on a Jands Hog). Catriona Forcer reports.

CONCERTS: Eric Clapton
He is back on an 11-month world tour (possibly his last), which reestablishes his legendary status. Onboard is LD Dave Maxwell, with a surprisingly svelte rig that relies heavily on Light & Sound Design Icons® and High End Systems Studio Beams™. The show also features soft goods from Atomic Design in Lititz, PA, and Drapegage Limited in Dublin.

FILM: Rock Star
The look of heavy metal concerts, circa early 1980s, is recreated in the forthcoming Warner Bros. release Rock Star, starring Mark Wahlberg. Lighting designer Glenn Wade used PAR cans and units from High End Systems, Syncrolite, Xenotech–Strong International, Lycian, ETC, and Wybron, to build a giant rig that, he says, with a few adjustments, could go out on tour. Control is via an Avolites Diamond console. John Calhoun reports.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Grand-Master Flash!
LD Chris Chew reviews the latest version of Artistic Licence's PC-based software, which includes new concepts like Ethernet connection and a powerful Effects Engine.
