SPECIAL CLUB FOCUS

CLUB WORLD 2002
A roundup of new clubs all over the globe. They include:

Sound Factory: The legendary New York dance-til-you-drop venue gets a makeover with Elation equipment;
In Discotheque: Copenhagen’s top dance spot gets a million-Euro makeover, with Highlight supplying the Clay Paky lighting;
Newtown: Montreal is the home to this stylish new concept-restaurant, bar, and dance club, all in one venue. Erikson Pro supplies the Martin lighting;
Stylus: A brand new club found in the basement of the Leeds University Student Union. Coemar and Avolites are part of the package from Promedia Systems;
Cellar Club: A new club in Reynolds, England with an intriguing array of gear, including Pulsar’s new ChromaRange of LED units, plus gear from Mad Manufacturing, ANYtronics, and Jem from CP Sound.

CONCERTS: Natalie Merchant
Natalie’s back, touring the heartland of America to promote her new album Motherland. Rising young LD Jason Boyd goes along for the ride, with a compact yet spectacular design for the dreamy diva. High End Systems is the equipment of choice. Catherine McHugh reports.

THEMED LIGHTING: Playhouse Disney Live
The popular cable show is recreated onsite at Disney World. Jason Kantrowitz is the LD. Companies involved in this project include ETC, TPR, City Theatrical, Wybron, GAM Products, and Le Maitre. Art Thomas reports.

ARCHITECTURE: The Burswood Casino
Perth, Australia's Burswood Casino Hotel has added a new rig of moving lights to light its atrium foyer. Faced with a problem--the lack of cable ducts where the units had to be hung--the technical team came up with a networking solution that elegantly solved the problem. Companies involved include Martin, Futurelight, Selecon, Alcorn McBride, Maxim, Colortran, and Enttec. Andy Ciddor reports.

CORPORATE: Xbox Unleashed
Arnold Serame tells all about one of his most unique projects: a 48-hour gaming competition that ran simultaneously in New York and LA, to launch the Microsoft Xbox. It’s a post-September 11th project, with unique security, engineering, and safety issues. Serame says it’s “a cautionary tale that every production person should know BEFORE planning an event.” Equipment supplied by ELS and Randiance Lighting.

DESIGNER PROFILE: Robert Wierzel
Ellen Lampert-Greaux talks to one of the top LDs in theatre, dance, and opera. Weirzel's career has included work at Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, NY, Yale Rep, NYC Opera, Allen Theatre in Houston, Goodman Theatre in Chicago, and BAM in NY, to name a few.
