SPECIAL REPORT: Education

Is There Life After Grad School?
You spent all that money, pulled all those all-nighters, sketched, built, and plotted until your hands turned blue, and finally got your graduate degree in design. Now what? Susan Hilferty, design chair of the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, charts the successes, challenges, and frustrations of graduates from various schools around country over the last five years.

PLUS: Young Designers To Watch
Our annual roundup of the best and brightest in set, lighting, costume, sound, and projection design. Who will be this year’s crop of talented tyros?

THEATRE

Designer Diary: A Site-Specific King Lear
Staged in six locations within the massive factory spaces of the Brewery Arts Complex in downtown LA by the Center for New Theatre at CalArts, this recent epic production of Shakespeare’s classic featured everything from 40' video projections to a suspended car wreck. Companies involved included Sanyo, Extron, Panasonic, Video Distribution, Apogee, Lectrosonics, Yamaha, Telex, Midas, Meyer, QSC Audio, Sony, Sennheiser, Level Control Systems, and AKG. The creative team for the production—set designer Chris Barreca, lighting designer Chris Akerlind, costume designer Ellen McCartney, and sound designers Jon Gottlieb and Leon Rothenberg—offer ED their personal journals from this challenging and unusual project.

Into the Woods, Jr.
As a special side project to the Kennedy Center Sondheim Celebration, a group of fourth through ninth graders helped design and star in the first Sondheim Celebration offering: Into the Woods, Jr. as part of the Broadway Junior Collection. The abbreviated version of Sondheim’s fairy tale, performed at the Center’s AFI Theatre stage, was done with the help of set designer Cheryl Foster, costume designer Rosemary Pardee, and lighting designer Lynn Joslin. Brad Hathaway reports.

TELEVISION

Designing Pilots
Just what's involved in designing the sets for a TV pilot? Besides a bit more money and bit more time, there's the satisfaction of creating something from scratch. On the other hand, there's the chaos of dealing with producers' uncertainties and constant changes, and the very good chance that your work will never see the light of broadcast. Production designers Roy Christopher, John Shaffner, Maxine Shepard, Carey Meyer, and others talk about such new and hopeful shows as Life of the Party, What I Like About You, Presidio Med, and Firefly. John Calhoun reports.
