The 2002 Winter Olympics: An Insider’s Diary

Famed themed entertainment designer Jeremy Railton gives us a rare behind the scenes glimpse of what it’s like putting together a project as complex and immense as the recent 2002 Winter Olympics. He shares his collaborative efforts with the rest of the design team, including puppet designer Michael Curry, lighting designer Bob Dickenson, and a myriad of other creative artisans.

DESIGNER PROFILE: Tim Hatley
This British set and costume designer has made a very big splash on Broadway this season with two very different productions: Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and Noel Coward’s Private Lives. He chats with ED about his career and his Broadway debut.

THEATRE: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
The West End’s latest musical extravaganza is this staged adaptation of the classic film, which is directed by Adrian Noble and features set and costumes by Anthony Ward, lighting by Mark Henderson, and sound by Simon Baker. Participating lighting vendors include White Light, The Moving Light Company, Vari-Lite, Martin, High End, ETC, Wybron, Strand, L&E, and GAM. Audio vendors include Autograph Sound and V-Dosc. Staging vendors include Stage Technologies, Howard Eaton, and Dellstar.

MAMMA MIA ON TOUR
Mamma Mia continues to win fans all over the country, from it's sold out run on Broadway to its many tours. The latest tour to go out features an interesting new twist on Andrew Bruce's and Bobby Aitken's sound design: the introduction of the Yahama PM1D digital console. Other vendors include Masque Sound, Sennheiser, TC Electronics, Focusrite, L'Acoustics, d&b, and QSC.

The RSC in NC
Earlier this spring, the Royal Shakespeare Company traveled to tiny Davidson College in North Carolina to stage a production of Merchant of Venice in the school’s new $12 million Duke Family Performance Hall. Arnold Wengrow talks to the Davidson technical crew about bringing the show into the new venue.
