ARCHITECTURE
North & South: Two Venues
Ellen Lampert-Gréaux reports on the newly renovated Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto and the newly built Hobby Center in Houston. Artec Consultants served as the acousticians for the Thomson Hall project, which includes audio equipment from Yamaha, Meyer, d&b audiotechnik, Tannoy, Crown; rigging machinery from Joel Theatrical Rigging Contracters Ltd.; and lighting equipment from Vari-Lite and Strand. The Hobby Center design architect is Robert A. M. Stern of New York, and the architect of record is Morris Architects of Houston. Companies involved with the Hobby Center project include Fisher Dachs Associates, Jaffee Holden Acoustics, ETC, Altman, L&E, Crest, EAW, BSS, and Clear-Com.
Dance Theatre Workshop
Dance Theatre Workshop has a new 200-seat theatre on West 19th Street in Manhattan, designed by Rawlings architects (Ed Rawlings, principal), with consultants Scott Lehrer for sound and Donald Holder Lighting Design for the lighting system (raceways, Ethernet nodes, etc). The lighting and audio systems include products from ETC, Littlelite, City Theatrical, Altman, NEC, Unison, Hewlett-Packard, Tannoy, Belden, Hubbel, Wybron, Crown, Allen & Heath, Soundcraft, and DPA. Theatrical Luminaires provided all with lamp, prewired connector, color frame, pipe clamp and safety cables.
TELEVISION
CNN Studios New York.
New York's new street-level CNN Studios provides viewers of "American Morning with Paula Zahn" a glimpse of Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall, and pedestrians a glimpse in through two layers of glass with acoustic/security glazing. Meridian Design Associates Architects, working with Production Design Group and Murphy Lighting Systems, carved the remotely controlled 16,000 sq. ft. facility out of former retail space in the Time Life Building, replacing a structural column with a steel girder system in the process.
