Our annual roundup of the year’s best in lighting technology. Who will win?

THEMED ENTERTAINMENT: 100 Years of Disney Magic
It's Walt Disney's centennial year and Walt Disney World is celebrating with four new parades. At Disney-MGM Studios, "Disney Stars and Motor Cars" features the entire gang of characters riding in a series of outrageously customized cars. At the Magic Kingdom, "Share a Dream Come True" features a series of giant snow globes depicting Disney characters. Disney's Animal Kingdom comes alive with "Mickey's Jammin' Jungle", and the popular "Tapestry of Nations" parade is being reworked into "Tapestry of Dreams." David Barbour and Ellen Lampert-Gréaux talk to the team members responsible for floats, costumes, and sound of these daytime park wide spectacles.

ARCHITECTURE: The Winter Garden Theatre
Architect and theatre restoration specialist Francesa Russo has been working on the interior restoration of the Shubert's famed Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. Home to Cats for 20 years, the theatre is being restored for the new Abba musical, Mamma Mia. Architectural highlights include the central dome, the side boxes, and columns as the theatre is returned to its pre-Cats splendor. The painting and gold leaf is by Evergreene Studios with soft goods created by I Weiss, new seats by Irwin Seating, custom designed carpet by Bloomsberg, architectural lighting by Lite Makers and Metropolitan Lighting, custom wall covering by Wolf Gordon, and drapery fabric by DesignTex (who also provided seating fabric in espresso velour). Ellen Lampert-Gréaux reports.

FILM: The Royal Tenenbaums
You think your family’s weird...production designer David Wasco and costume designer Karen Patch give color and form to the eccentric family at the center of director Wes Anderson's off-kilter valentine to New York. John Calhoun reports.

DESIGNER BUSINESS: Theme Park Recruiting
How do the major theme parks attract the designers and technicians who work on their projects? A lot of it is through major recruitment efforts at trade shows, among other efforts. John Calhoun looks at the ways Disney and Universal recruit talent for their projects, and talks to designers who’ve gone through the process.

TECHNICAL THEATRE: A Metamorphosing Metamorphoses
Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre production of Metamorphoses, a meditation on the myths of Ovid written and directed by Mary Zimmerman, is a big hit on the regional circuit, making stops at the Berkeley Rep, Seattle Rep, Mark Taper Forum, and now the Second Stage in New York. This wouldn’t seem like a big deal except that Dan Ostling’s set is essentially a big pool. Michael Eddy talks to Ostling and production stage manager Anjali Bidani, who's worked on the production since Chicago, about the challenges in reconfiguring the production for each location. Scenery for the New York production was constructed by Atlantic Studios.
