CONCERTS

Peter Gabriel
In his first tour in 10 years, Peter Gabriel has enlisted two northern lights: acclaimed director/designer Robert Le Page and veteran Cirque du Soleil lighting designer Luc Lafortune. UK’s NegEarth is the primary lighting contractor, with Upstaging as its partner on the North American shows. Vendors include Clay Paky, Barco, ETC, Martin, Total Fabrications, Robert Juliat, and Diversitronics. The rig features a raft of High End gear; from x.Spots to four Catalyst units. The NegEarth crew includes programmer/operator Dennis Gardner, crew chief John Shelly, head electrician Andy Porter, and Dave Cox in charge of Catalyst systems.

ARCHITECTURE

EAST MEETS WEST

Mondavi Performing Arts Center and Singapore Esplanade, two very different spaces.
The Esplanade
Theatres on The Bay in Singapore opened in October 2002, with a 2,000-seat lyric theatre, a 1,800-seat concert hall, and two smaller venues. The architects for the project were DP Architects and Michael Wilford and Partners, with Theatre Projects Consultants in London serving as theatre consultants and Russell Johnson and colleagues at New York City-based Artec as acousticians. Lighting equipment includes products from Strand Lighting, ETC, WYSIWYG, DHA Lighting, High End Systems, Selecon, Rainbow, L&E, Howard Eaton, and James Thomas, while sound reinforcement systems include products from Cadac, Spirit, Allen & Heath, Yamaha, BSS, Tascam, Lexicon, d&b, Meyer, Tannoy, Martin, Genelec, Aphex, and Crown. Stage machinery was provided by Mitsubishi, Bytecraft, and Gala.

THEATRE

Movin’ Out
Broadway’s latest hit, a dance piece choreographed by Twyla Tharp and set to the music of Billy Joel, features an impressive sound design by Peter Fitzgerald, with help from Joel’s longtime engineer Brian Ruggles. Vendors include Sound Associates and Meyer Sound.

TELEVISION

CNN Studios New York
New York’s new street-level CNN Studios provides viewers of American Morning with Paula Zahn a glimpse of Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall, and pedestrians a glimpse through two layers of glass with acoustic/security glazing. Meridian Design Associates Architects, working with Production Design Group and Murphy Lighting Systems, carved the remotely controlled 16,000-sq.-ft. facility out of former retail space in the Time Life Building, replacing a structural column with a steel girder system in the process.

ON LIGHTING
Patrick Dierson sings “Where Have All the Moving Mirrors Gone?”

ON AUDIO
Giles Rowland works on the inaugural International Festival of Musical Theatre—27 productions, 80 performances, 11 different venues—and lives to tell the tale.
