Cinematographer Dean Cundey takes up residence at UCLA

Dean Cundey, ASC, has been named Kodak cinematographer in residence at the UCLA School of Theatre, Film and Television for the Spring 2001 semester. Cundey, who is an alumnus of UCLA, will teach a series of workshops that focus on the aesthetic role that the cinematographer plays in visual storytelling. Cundey will also screen three of his films pending availability.

Among Cundey's films are Halloween (1978), Romancing the Stone (1984), the Back to the Future trilogy (1985, 1989, 1990), Jurassic Park (1993), and What Women Want (2000). His most recent project was The Face, a two-hour documentary on the history and role of art in the Christian religion for WNET-TV, a PBS affiliate.

He received an Oscar nomination for Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and Outstanding Achievement Award nominations from the American Society of Cinematographers for Hook (1992) and Apollo 13 (1995).

Cundey studied architecture and cinema at UCLA, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1968. Cundey's interest shifted to cinematography when he took a class taught by James Wong Howe, ASC.

A screening of Who Framed Roger Rabbit is scheduled for May 7 and one of Death Becomes Her for June 4.
