Barton Myers Awarded AIA/LA Gold Medal

Architect Barton Myers has been awarded the prestigious 2002 AIA/LA Gold Medal for the outstanding body of his architectural work and exemplary design standards. The award was presented at a gala on October 24, 2002 at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles, CA. Former recipients include Richard Meier, and Frank Gehry.

Based in Los Angeles, and a fellow of the AIA, Myers is known for his compelling designs for performing arts spaces, most notably the award-winning New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ, and The Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Cerritos, CA (look for his trademark fireplace in both venues). Other large-scale cultural projects range from the master plan for a five-block area in Los Angeles, including the Museim of Contemporary Art and the Music Center.

Barton Myers Associates was founded in Toronto, Canada in 1975. The firm moved to Los Angeles in the early 1980's when Myers began to teach at the UCLA Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning. In 1986, Myers was the recipient of the first Toronto Arts Award for Architecture, and in 1994 he received the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Medal. Canadian performing arts projects include the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta.

Current projects include visual arts and performing arts centers in Tempe Arizona and New Brunswick, NJ. The Myers residence in Santa Barbara, CA, completed in 1998, won a 2002 AIA award for innovative housing design.
