ALPS Buys BN Productions Division

ALPS/Advanced Lighting & Production Services, a Boston, MA-area theatrical lighting and special event production company, has recently purchased all the assets of the rental, production and resale divisions of BN Productions of Woburn, MA. This acquisition creates one of the largest lighting companies in New England, with all operations being run from ALPS current location in Randolph, MA.

"We are all very excited about this purchase, as it positions ALPS for growth well beyond the New England market," states Steven Way, president of ALPS. "Our philosophy is simple and we make it clear to everyone who comes to work here: The rental equipment and product lines we offer are important, but make us no different than our competition–our extraordinary employees do. We truly believe that difference has been the key to our success."

ALPS started in 1981 (then called BWA Lighting) by Steven Way as a basement business and grew throughout the 80s and 90s providing local sales, rentals, and production services to the theatre, corporate, and special event industries. Business partner Jim deVeer began his company (deV Enterprises) around 1990 providing rentals and sales to the Boston area theatre industry. "Steve and I were constantly cross-renting gear to each other and quickly discovered we had complementing inventories and services without competing. So we began to talk and in 1995, I came into the corporation as Vice President and we changed the name to ALPS / Advanced Lighting & Production Services," explains deVeer.

Over the years ALPS has expanded their organization to include theatrical lighting rentals, production services, sales, installations, systems integration, and repair and maintenance services. Their Randolph, MA, facility includes a Design Studio for product demonstrations, client mock-ups, and the newest addition, ALPS Academy, offering training classes and seminars.
