Jill BC Du Boff is a sound designer who started out as a dramaturge then, after years doing everything else backstage, including casting and wardrobe, fell into sound after being blown away by the designs of David Van Tieghem. She convinced him to taker her on as a mentee and after years of mixing and assisting, she started designing her own shows.
She began by working off-Broadway, then regionally and finally, through luck and will, Broadway. She has worked locally at theaters such as Lincoln Center, MTC, Atlantic, Vineyard, MCC, Playwrights Horizons, The Public, Second Stage, NYTW, WP, New Georges, Flea, Cherry Lane, Signature, Clubbed Thumb (Affiliate Artist), The New Group and Adobe. Regionally she has designed Minneapolis Children’s Theatre, Bay Street, La Jolla Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse, Westport Country Playhouse, Berkeley Rep, Portland Stage, Long Wharf, The Alley, Kennedy Center, NYS&F, South Coast Rep, Humana, Williamstown, Berkshire Theatre, ATF among others.
She also produces radio for NPR, designs podcasts and mixes television shows in post production. She is an adjunct professor at Sarah Lawrence College. She has been nominated for two Drama Desk nominations and three Hewes Award nominations, has been awarded the Ruth Morley Design award and last year she won an Obie for Sustained Excellence in Sound Design.
At the 2012 BSMC her session will focus on the design processes of Wit and Other Desert Cities, two shows she have designed on Broadway this year. She will also discuss some major differences between Off Broadway and Broadway. Other Desert Cities began Off Broadway and transferred, and Wit had a healthy run Off Broadway twelve years ago. Being the first female sound designer to teach at BSMC, she will also discuss being a woman in the theatre.
