BLMC Spotlight: Howell Binkley

Tony-Award winner Howell Binkley joins the Broadway Lighting Master Classes for a discussion on how lighting designers and set designers collaborate for the theatre in his session on Wednesday May 21, “Dissecting Real Estate.” Says Binkley, “I will use two of my current shows on Broadway, The Heights and Cry Baby, to discuss with visuals how as a lighting designer I work with the set designer—how we carve in room for the electrics and how to get them to work with the automation. What worked, what didn’t work, and problem solving techniques.”

Binkley, who won a Tony Award in 2006 for Best Lighting Design of a Musical for his work on Jersey Boys, will focus on how set designers and lighting designers have to collaborate to paint enough space to light the scenery and how to have enough space for the scenery and how it all works via collaboration.
