Projection designer Wendall K. Harrington, the “godmother of projection design, returns to the Broadway Lighting Master Classes (BLMC) faculty, presenting “Sets, Lights, Projections: Keeping Your Focus In The New Digital Age” on Wednesday, May 20 at NYU.
Projected images are everywhere in this digital age, and they are more than just a fad. Harrington takes a look at how to think about projections, when they’re right and when they’re not. Lighting and projection must work together to create a unified stage image, so Harrington shows shares how to smooth out those edges.
Harrington’s Broadway design credits include: To Be Or Not To Be, Grey Gardens, In My Life, The Good Body, Vincent in Brixton, Amy’s View, Putting It Together, Ragtime, Freak, Company, The Will Rogers Follies, The Heidi Chronicles, The Who’s Tommy, and They’re Playing Our Song. Opera credits include: The Grapes of Wrath for Minnesota Opera, The Turn of the Screw with The Royal Danish Opera, A View from the Bridge at the Met, The Photographer at BAM; The Magic Flute in Florence; and Orpheo in Vienna. She has created ballets with ABT, Doug Varone, and The Royal Danish Ballet, and on the concert circuit, she designed projection for the Talking Heads, Simon and Garfunkel, Chris Rock, and John Fogerty. She designed and directed the premiere of Snapshots with the Elements Quartet and the opera Arjuna’s Dilemma. She teaches Projection for Performance at the Yale School of Drama. In 2007 she received the Ruth Morley Designing Woman Award from the League of Professional Theatre Women.
The Broadway Lighting Master Classes will be held May 18 to 20 at NYU’s Skirball Center For The Performing Arts and includes a ticket to attend9 to 5 The Musical on Broadway, with lighting by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer, additional lighting for Broadway by Ken Posner, and images by Peter Nigrini. All four designers will engage in a discussion of the lighting for 9 to 5 as it evolved from Los Angeles to Broadway.
