Abe Jacob, legendary sound specialist, who serves as the creative consultant for the Broadway Sound Master Classes(BSMC) has announced a line-up of leading sound designers who will participate on the faculty this year. The fifth annual edition of the BSMC will kick off on Friday evening May 18 with a performance of the Broadway musical, Pirate Queen, with sound design by Jonathan Deans. The classes will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 19th and 20th in the Burrows Theatre at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, 721 Broadway, New York City.
Creative consultant Abe Jacob was a seminal sound designer in the 1970s when he worked on the original productions of Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. His numerous sound design credits include Pippin’, The Rocky Horror Show, A Chorus Line, Beatlemania, Dancin’, and Les Misérables. He is also the sound designer in residence at the New York State Theatre at Lincoln Center.
This year’s BSMC faculty includes:
Jonathan Deans has designed sound for more than 150 productions. His recent credits include Cirque du Soleil's Las Vegas productions Love, KA, Zumanity, "O," and Mystère and in Orlando La Nouba, as well as Cirque's touring shows such as Saltimbanco and Corteo. Broadway credits include Pirate Queen, Fosse, Follies, Seussical, Parade, Candide, The Music Man, Ragtime, Taboo, Disney's King David, and Beauty and the Beast. For several years he taught theatre sound design to MFA students at UCLA. At the BSMC this year, Jonathan Deans will present a case study of his sound design for Pirate Queen.
Tom Clark, Mark Menard, and Nevin Steinberg of Acme Sound Partners, whose credits include the current revival of A Chorus Line, High Fidelity, Avenue Q, The Drowsy Chaperone, Hot Feet, Light In The Piazza, Spamalot, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and The Boy From Oz.
Brian Ronan whose sound design credits include Spring Awakening; Grey Gardens; Pajama Game; All Shook Up; Twelve Angry Men; Master Harold…And The Boys; The Look of Love; The Boys From Syracuse; Fortune’s Fool; The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife; The Rainmaker; You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown; Little Me; Cabaret; Triumph of Love; 1776; and State Fair; Off-Broadway: Bug.
In addition to these leading Broadway sound designers, sessions will include Domonic Sack of Sound Associates, Todd Meier of Meyer Sound on the Fundamentals of System Design and Optimization; and a special session on sound design education in universities.
