Vari-Lite goes to college

Vari-Lite is working the university circuit this winter and spring, via two separate programs: Its DMX workshops are crisscrossing the country again, and the Dallas, TX-based firm has announced the second annual edition of its gobo contest.

Says Vari-Lite's university outreach manager Brendan Quigley, "the DMX workshop is designed primarily to expose students (and area professionals) to DMX consoles as well as Vari*Lite(R) systems, which are not limited to Broadway shows and high-profile concert tours. We want people to realize that adding our luminaires to their existing DMX or conventional system can be very simple."

Fourteen spaces are available for each intensive day-long training session, which costs $159. Dates and locations are January 10 (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN) and 17 (Temple University, Philadelphia, PA); February 7 (University of Maryland, College Park, MD) and 17 (Penn State, State College, PA); and March 7 (University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI), 14 (San Diego State, San Diego, CA), and 28 (Arizona State University, Phoenix, AZ). For more information, consult the Vari-Lite website at www.vari-lite.com, or, if you would like to host a workshop at your school, call Quigley at 214/630-1963 or e-mail [email protected].

The gobo contest is open to all undergraduate and graduate students. If you would like to see your work in lights, and added to the company's Vari*Image(TM) gobo catalog, consult the company's website or call Vari-Lite at 214/630-1963. Artwork submissions are due January 31; winners will be announced no later than March 31.
