Towards 2000 Vets Form New Company

Entertainment Environment Equipment (E3) Inc., a new design and distribution company formed by former employees of Towards 2000 that specializes in lighting and audio systems, has opened a new facility in North Hollywood, CA.

Principals of E3 include Richard Rutherford, Danny Quinones, and Scot Feiwell. Quinones, a 15-year veteran of the industry, most recently spent seven years at Towards 2000; he will be responsible for market development and retail sales. Rutherford, another veteran of Towards 2000, brings over 20 years of industry sales and systems design experience. Feiwell will be responsible for overall corporate financial management.

The 5,000-sq.-ft. space will house corporate headquarters and main showrooms for audio and lighting systems. Showroom areas include multi-channel playback audio systems, video projections, automated intelligent lighting systems, and special effects. In addition, there is 10,000 sq. ft. of lower floor facilities available for special events and film production.

E3's focus will be in design and sales of intelligent lighting and audio systems involving specialty applications for architectural and entertainment venues.

Designer and educator Ming Cho Lee will speak at Southeastern Theatre Conference's annual get-together, this year in Greensboro, NC, March 3-7. The theme of the convention is "Cultural Diversity and Unity in Theatre"....JBL Professional, the Northridge, CA-based loudspeaker manufacturer, promoted Simon Jones from product manager to senior product manager. Jones, who joined JBL in 1995, will work closely with JBL's engineers, marketing staff, and customers to develop products for the fixed installation market. In other JBL news, the company appointed Mark Bailey, formerly of Arbiter Pro Group, JBL's UK distributor, to the newly created position of technical support manager, Europe.... Atlas/Soundelier of Fenton, MO has hired Todd Rockwell as marketing manager for acoustical products. Rockwell, a graduate of Michigan Technological University, joins Atlas/Soundelier from Community Professional Loudspeakers, where he was marketing and engineering liaison; prior to his stint with Community, Rockwell was at Electro-Voice....In a move that hoist manufacturer Columbus McKinnon Corp. says will "enhance its capabilities as a major provider of material handling products and solutions," the Amherst, NY-based company has purchased the assets of Abell-Howe Crane division of Abell-Howe Company of Forest Park, IL, for $70 million in cash. Abell-Howe, which manufactures jibs and overhead cranes, will retain its name and continue to operate as an independent crane builder; the major change occurring with the acquisition will be that CM's sales network will now sell Abell-Howe Crane products in addition to its line of chain and wire-rope hoists, high-strength steel chain, forged accessories, conveyor systems, lift tables, and other related products.... Panasonic Broadcast & Digital Systems (PBDSC) has named James Chan to the position of product marketing manager for its Presentation Systems Group. Chan will be responsible for the development and marketing of Panasonic presentation and multimedia products, and the company's new plasma display panels. Chan is based at PBDSC's new headquarters facility near the Universal City section of LA....

Congratulations to Robin Wagner, who's joining the Theatre Hall of Fame, the list of Broadway immortals found in the Gershwin Theatre. Wagner's co-honorees this year include producer Alexander H. Cohen, Charles Durning, Zelda Fichandler, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, Richard Kiley, and Ellis Rabb. Meanwhile, the West End hit, Saturday Night Fever, also designed by Wagner and based on a certain movie you may have heard about, is reportedly Broadway-bound....More congratulations are in order to the winners of the 1998 Vivian Robinson Audelco Recognition Awards, which honor African-Americans in the theatre. Winners included sound designer David Wright, for his work on the American Place Theatre production of Fly, costume designer Marcel Christian for Julius Caesar Set in Africa, set designer Steve Walker for Bolt From the Blue, and lighting designer Christophe Pierre for Nzinga's Children. The awards were given out last November ....Gerriets GmbH/Germany, the drape manufacturer, manufactured and installed backdrops, half-tabs, legs, borders, gauzes, and projection screens in Madrid's Teatro Real. Another recent project was the installation of a 34-part, lightweight curtain hoisting system in Koln-Arena, a new "event location" in Cologne, Germany....Two new designers have enlisted in The Civil War. Costume designer William Ivey Long and lighting designer Paul Gallo have joined the Broadway-bound musical, teaming up with already-in-place set designer Douglas Schmidt and sound designer Karl Richardson. The addition of Gallo and Long is not surprising, since the new director is Jerry Zaks, their frequent collaborator.....Schmidt, not seen much on Broadway in recent years, has two shows opening this spring. The other is Band in Berlin, a new musical about the Comedian Harmonists, the German vaudeville troupe that was broken up by the Nazis. Band in Berlin is only the beginning of the Harmonists vogue; a new movie about them opened in New York recently, and Barry Manilow's musical, Harmony, also about the group, is eyeing Broadway for next season. Band also features costumes by Jonathan Bixby, lighting by Kirk Bookman, sound by David Schirman, media design (whatever that is) by Richard Law, and film sequences by Anthony Chase...The design team of Bright Lights, Big City, the new musical at New York Theatre Workshop, is Paul Clay (scenery), Angela Wends (costumes), and Blake Burba (lighting). If those names seem familiar, you may recall that they did a little thing called Rent. Jon Weston is the sound designer, and Michael Greif, also of Rent, directs.....ATK/Audiotek supplied a QSC Audio powered V-DOSC system for the Miss America Pageant held at the Atlantic City Convention Hall recently. ATK flew the QSC PowerLight amplifier racks powering the center cluster above the boxes to avoid unwanted signal degradation that may have occurred due to the long cable run backstage... Paul Steinberg designed the sets for the recent Chicago Lyric Opera production of Weill's The Rise and Fall of Mahagonny. Helping him out was Portland, OR scene shop RA Reed Productions, which built a 14'-diameter industrial fan, a crash-landed helicopter, and a 15' steel gridwork clock that the actors climbed on and moved about the set....A Level Controls System (LCS) mainframe lies at the heart of the automated audio systems installed in the multimedia "arenas" at four new Foot Locker stores in Boston, Chicago, Orlando, and Stamford, CT. Steve Schull of Acoustic Dimensions designed the sound, using an LCS LD-88 digital mixer programmed by LCS CueStation software to circulate sound throughout the installations....Richmond Sound Design Ltd., the Vancouver, BC-based manufacturer of sound and show control equipment, reports that its AudioBox(TM) moving matrix sound source, originally sourced for The Judas Kiss by the Almeida Theatre Company in London, was also used in three subsequent West End productions. The unit, slated for permanent installation after the original run, was instead featured in Jonathan Kent's production of Naked (by Luigi Pirandello, starring Juliette Binoche) at the Playhouse Theatre, in Howard Davies' The Iceman Cometh (with Kevin Spacey) at the Old Vic, and in a new translation of Racine's Phaedre (by England's late Poet Laureate Ted Hughes and starring Dame Diana Rigg) at the Albery Theatre.....Taft Design Inc., currently working on the redesign of the Los Angeles Central Library store, has been retained by Warner Bros. International Recreation Enterprises to work on the preliminary design for an attraction at the proposed new WB Movie World theme park in Spain...LA scenic company UV/FX and Miller Genuine Draft collaborated on an onsite promotion for Miller Genuine Draft's Blind Date event in Chicago and London, where winners of the Blind Date contest were treated to a show by a series of bands. UV/FX designed changing dual image murals, which had one look under normal lighting and, with the introduction of blacklight, transformed to reveal the Blind Date promotional and point-of-purchase characters....For a Democratic Party fundraiser at Sylvester Stallone's Miami waterfront estate, Illuminart of Davie, FL, made a 100' waterfall glow in shades of amber....
