Tanguera is a new Argentinean musical that, having won success in South America, has set off for Europe. Currently it is scheduled to play Madrid until mid-March, when it heads off to engagements in Lisbon and Barcelona. Further dates will follow around Europe, with another company planning tours in the US and Japan. (A possible Broadway engagement is apparently being considered.)
As designed by Ariel del Mastro, the strikingly lit production makes use of a wide range of gear. Automated units include 35 Clay Paky Stage Zooms and 16 Clay Paky Stage Colors. Conventional units include 46 Selecon Pacific 12/28° and 65 Selecon Pacific 26/50° units, along with 86 PAR-64s, eight Altman 1kW PCs, six Altman 1kW fresnels, seven Altman ZipStrips, and three Altman birdies. For color, there are 92 Chroma-Q scrollers and 40 Wybron CXI units, as well as a variety of filters from Lee and GAM Products. Other key pieces of gear include two Robert Juliat Aramis HMI 2500 followspots and two DF-50 hazers from Reel EFX. Control is provided by two grandMA consoles from MA Lighting.
Del Mastro is a well-known LD in Argentina who is, perhaps, best-known in this country for adapting Natasha Katz's design for Disney's Beauty and the Beast in Argentina and Spain. Other recent credits include Fiddler on the Roof, Les Misérables, Chicago, Cats, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Nine, Little Shop of Horrors, Woman of the Year, Saturday Night Fever, the French drama Enigma Variations, Blood Brothers, Neil Simon's The Prisoner of Second Avenue, the musical Sugar (based on the film Some Like It Hot) and Gaudi, a musical about the famous artist, which opened in Barcelona last September.
