Strip lights: Lightfair International adds luster to Las Vegas

With more than 14,200 attendees, Lightfair International won its bet that Las Vegas would be a good location for its ninth annual trade show and conference for architectural lighting, which took place May 27-29. Not only is Las Vegas one of the top trade show cities in the United States, but its streets simply shimmer with billions of bright lights.

The extensive conference program at Lightfair offers lighting designers, architects, and interior designers the chance to earn continuing education credits, and workshop tracks included Entertainment Architecture; Design Applications, Research, and Technology; Energy and Facilities; Design Process and Specification; and Lighting Cultures. One highlight of the Entertainment Architecture track was a 90-minute presentation by Luc Lafortune, LD for the Cirque du Soleil (Lightfair also organized a group trip to see the Cirque du Soleil's permanent Las Vegas show, Mystere). Lafortune is always a lively speaker and his Lightfair presentation provided a look at the challenges of lighting the dangerous feats of circus performers.

Other sessions in the Entertainment Architecture track featured lighting designers such as Ted Ferreira of City Design Group and Karl Haas of Gallegos Lighting Design, who addressed the issues of adapting theatrical fixtures for permanent installations, and a look at lighting for themed environments by Pat Gallegos of Gallegos Lighting Design and Joe Falzetta of Walt Disney Imagineering.

Lighting Dimensions magazine sponsored and presented a full-day seminar on the basics of fiber-optic lighting as part of Lightfair's pre-show conference. This session drew more than 175 attendees, and Lighting Dimensions will delve deeper into fiber-optic technologies with a more advanced session, which includes hands-on design techniques, at LDI98 in November.

Lighting designers Charles Stone of Fisher Marantz Renfro Stone and Rogier van der Heide from Hollands Licht in Amsterdam (see "Earth tones," page 54) took a look into the crystal ball of lighting for a preview of the future, while Paul Gregory of Focus Lighting and Jonathan Speirs of JSA, Edinburgh, and Speirs and Masters, London, talked about project management and client relations in a global market.

Several honors were handed out at the New Product Showcase and Awards Presentation, sponsored by Architectural Lighting magazine and inter.Light. The Chameleon series from Color Kinetics won the best new product of the year award, with the Light Drive 1000 from Fusion Lighting claiming the technical innovation award. The design excellence award was presented to the Hollywood #1701 from Lumiere Design & Manufacturing, while the energy award went to the Decora wall-mounted occupancy sensor from Leviton Manufacturing. Best booth awards went to Tech Lighting (in the 100-200 sq. ft. category), Ledalite Architectural Products (300-400 sq. ft.), Bruck Lighting USA (400-600 sq. ft.), and Eye Lighting International (600 sq. ft. and larger). Future dates for Lightfair International include May 11-13, 1999, in San Francisco, and May 9-11, 2000, in New York City. But the odds are pretty good that the show will be heading back to Las Vegas soon, based on the success it had there this year.
