Product Pick of the Month: Barco MiPIX

Barco MiPIX

MiPIX is Barco's brand new modular intelligent LED pixel block, which measures only 40.3mm H × 40.3mm W × 22mm D (1.59" × 1.59" × 1.38"). Its small size and shape allow for it to be used to create intelligent lighting effects on large-scale backdrops of any form, shape, or size, while also offering the possibility of full video content on 3D logos or other free-form shapes. The MiPIX blocks further facilitate the construction of large-scale backdrops by the fact that they can be spaced apart at various distances, making the pixel blocks a cost-effective medium for ultra-large applications.

The MiPIX pixel block, which weights a mere 34g (1.2oz), has a resolution of 20mm, and is sold as part of a system comprising 128 pixel blocks and a control unit. Each pixel block consists of four SMD LEDs that deliver a brightness of 1,300 Nit. Due to the SMD LED technology, a MiPIX display accommodates viewing angles of up to 145 degrees.

The first sale of the new MiPIX pixel blocks goes to Barco rental partner, XL Video, who installed the product on the spectacular Daimler-Chrysler Mercedes booth at the recent Frankfurt Auto Show. XL Video won the contract to install 47,000 MiPIX blocks totaling 1,800 square meters on the Mercedes booth. The total length was 2km (1.24 miles) with a display that was 12m (39.37') high and stretched around a show space of 150m (492').

Rene De Keyzer, managing director of XL Video states: “We are enormously proud of our first purchase of MiPIX. The small, lightweight pixel block with its SMD LED technology offers us a wide scope of creative opportunities. By providing us with the flexibility to build LED into backdrops and shapes of any size or form — and to display both video and/or intelligent lighting effects — MiPIX enables us to differentiate ourselves from our competition. It allows us to bring our clients another creative medium with which they can realise their designs.”

The Mercedes project, which was four months in the making, saw Barco work closely with rental partner XL Video and Mercedes booth designer Markgraph.

Osram HPR 575/115

Osram Photo-Optic introduces the patent pending HPR 575/115 high performance tungsten halogen lamp for theatrical, concert, and architectural applications. The lamp has been engineered for maximum light collection efficiency in parabolic and ellipsoidal fixtures. The specially positioned internal reflector reduces the lumens lost through the rear of the lamp, while increasing the forward lumens in PAR and ellipsoidal fixtures. The result is a sharper, more intense beam pattern and significantly higher light output. A secondary benefit of the reflector is reduced lamp seal temperature due to the effective deflection of infrared heat. Increased light output means fewer fixtures required and reduced energy consumption.

Bandit Lites 30-Way Hoist Controller

Bandit Lites announces the development of a new 30-way hoist controller. This smaller and lighter version of the controller joins the Bandit line of 60-way and 10-way controllers. The unit is designed for ease of maintenance and quick replacement of components in the field. It is making its maiden appearance on the current tour with REM designed by Willie Williams. The 30-Way controller integrates seamlessly with Bandit's patented Motor Control System (MotoData) and will work in both the United States and Europe. It is a Class II double insulated enclosure and incorporates the standard safety features that have been a part of Bandit Lites hoist controllers for over a decade, such as 30 bi-color lighted toggles to control the direction of the hoist and an E-stop switch that kills all 30 motors.
