Operatic bravura

For many years, Duane Schuler has lit as many as 18 to 20 operas per year, including new productions and revivals. He has decided to pull back a bit and light fewer shows this year, perhaps just an even dozen, as well as relinquish his long-standing position as resident lighting designer at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. “It was just too much,” he said on a cold winter day in New York, as he talked about three of his most recent new productions: two in Chicago, and one at the Metropolitan Opera
