This Month In 1987

In the April 1987 issue of Theatre Crafts The cover story featured The Hunger Artist (photographed in early tech rehearsals by Carol Rosegg/Martha Swope Associates), which marked the third collaboration of lighting designer Paul Gallo with director Martha Clarke and set designer Robert Israel.

Another story featured Theatre Crafts' 20th anniversary. This year marks 40 years of theatre coverage for the franchise.

A look at “costume sculpture performance” artist Sha Sha Higby and her creations included Cows Under a Pepper Tree and Chiffon and Wood, a ritualistic dance.

In “Rock ‘N’ Roll Lighting Control,” then technical editor Steve Pollack looked at consoles and how having Bump and Solo buttons was not enough for the ultimate rock show of 1987. This included an overview of consoles from Avolites, CAE, Celco, Spectrum Design, Teatronics, and Zero 88.

The Washington Ear was providing audio description services for hearing-impaired patrons in Washington, DC theatres.

A preview of the 26th annual USITT conference in Minneapolis-St. Paul included award news, with that year's recipients including Jules Fisher (for service to the industry), Tanya Moiseiwitsch (Thomas DeGaetani Award), and Richard L. Arnold (Founders' Award for service to USITT).
