Karma Chameleon

The DJ Store of San Diego recently carried out two installations for local club impresario Michael Viscuso. Leading the way is the On Broadway Event Center, the largest venue in town, situated in the former Home Federal Bank, where the original vault becomes a design feature. Built in 1926 by John D. Spreckles, for many years the Home Federal Bank building was the highest in San Diego. Today, On Broadway Event Center has become the city's most lavish destination. Contemporary fixtures are found alongside the original marble floors, ornate ceilings, numerous arches, and two-story Grecian columns. The original bank vault has been renovated into a plush billiard lounge, complete with the original vault doors, each weighing several tons.

A former storage space in the basement is now a VIP lounge called The Karma Room (above), offering an exotic “Arabian Nights” theme created by Katherine Magallon of Atmosphere Design. The new lighting includes eight Coemar iSpot 150s, four American DJ Ultra Scans, four Martin Professional CX-4s, two Martin Atomic strobes, and an Antari haze machine, all controlled by a Martin LightJockey with two flat-screen monitors.

Upstairs in the main dance floor, “All the moving heads and all the color changers are Coemar,” says The DJ Store's Tony Mirador. “We are using eight ProSpot 250s, eight ProWash 250s, and 24 ColorBeams. These are some of the best-manufactured fittings on the market and will outperform fixtures costing another $800 and more.”

The DJ Store has also installed two unique dance areas nearby at the rear of the upscale steakhouse restaurant Deco's, also owned by Viscuso. Opulently designed, with an Art Deco theme, the dance floor in the rear lounge is complemented by an al fresco annex, where diners can dance under the stars. The rig there also uses Coemar iSpot 150s controlled by a Martin LightJockey.
