Design show launching this month

Design.y.c. is the new umbrella identity linking Interplan and several other interior planning and design shows that will be held at New York's Jacob Javits Convention Center October 27-30. More than 20,000 interior designers, architects, facility managers, and other industry professionals are expected to attend the event, which is produced by the Miller Freeman Design Group.

Design.y.c. is highlighted by the fifth annual Interplan, the East Coast's largest commercial interior planning and design exposition, which drew more than 250 exhibitors last year. A new addition this year will be a Lighting Pavilion, including Luxo and Waldmann Lighting. Other events will include the Design Power interdisciplinary education conference, produced by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID); a new exposition, The Design Show: Environments for Living, a "one-stop shopping" source for residential specifiers featuring an Antiques Pavilion; and Batimat Design-Build, the international building products and design exposition.

Design.y.c. kicks off October 27 with "ASID: A Celebration," to be held at the Roosevelt Hotel. Co-sponsored by Cooper Lighting, ASID, and Miller Freeman, the program will include various presentations and awards. ASID and Steelcase Inc. will present the opening ceremonies at the Javits at 9am October 28, including a keynote address by Peter Leyden, futurist, author, and former editor-at-large of Wired Ventures. That evening, Designer's Saturday Inc. will host its Metropolitan Museum of Art gala, in the museum's Great Hall and Temple of Dendur, which drew 4,000 guests last year. On October 29, the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and Contract Design magazine will host the APEX Awards Breakfast Presentation, open to all exhibitors and attendees. IIDA is celebrating the award's 30th anniversary with a product retrospective of past winners at the Javits. Steve Forbes, president and CEO of Forbes magazine, will deliver a keynote address on the state of the economy on October 30.
