Capitol improvements

Puerto Rico-based Switch Lighting Performance has finished one of its biggest jobs, the lighting of the country's Capitol Building in San Juan. An additional 84 EC-1(TM) luminaires are being used to illuminate the south, east, west, and top portions of the capitol; Lighting Dimensions reviewed the initial installation of 36 of the units on the building's north side in our Latin American supplement last March (see "Legislative lighting," page a39).

"This is the world's largest installation of EC-1s," says Switch Lighting project director Willie Cortes, who laughs that "if you look at our little island from a satellite, those blinking lights you see will be ours." The completed Capitol lighting premiered last December 1, the same night Switch Lighting launched a holiday-themed sound, light, and laser spectacular that ran across the north side of the building, which ran until January 10. The 15-minute show, which ran hourly, incorporated laser systems from Miami-based Laser Production Network, audio from Carson, CA-based OWI Inc., and more than 220 custom gobos from Rosco and High End Lithopatterns(R), projected from 20 Cyberlights(R). The High End system was designed and programmed by Brad Schiller.
