Audio Technica Artist Elite 5000 Series Wireless System

Audio-Technica has unveiled a sound designer's wireless system for theatre and event production. Designed for use in high-traffic audio environments, Audio-Technica's Artist Elite® 5000 Series Wireless System, when combined with its new AT899 Subminiature Lavalier and two AEW-T1000 UniPak transmitters, provides a wireless system and a lavalier mic designed to perform flawlessly night after night.

The system starts with the AT899cW Subminiature Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone, which is available in either black or theater beige (AT899cW-TH). Intended for high-quality, unobtrusive operation, the AT899cW is a mere 5 mm in diameter. The subminiature omni element is enclosed in a rugged, low-profile housing with internal construction designed to minimize noise from handling, clothing, costumes, and wind. It includes a complete accessory kit with single and double mounts, clothing clip, viper clip, magnetic clip (black mic only), two open-pore foam windscreens, and two metal mesh element covers to protect the condenser element from moisture, makeup, and other contaminants.

Audio-Technica's Artist Elite 5000 Series Wireless System features IntelliScan frequency selection for a choice of two hundred selectable UHF channels. The 5000 Series also features PC-compatible control software. Specifically applicable for theatre and event productions, the AEW-5111 UHF Wireless Dual-UniPak Transmitter System includes an AEW-R5200 true diversity frequency-agile dual receiver, and two AEW-T1000 UniPak transmitters. The heart of the system is the AEW-R5200 receiver, which comprises two independent receivers in a single full-rack housing. Two hundred selectable UHF channels are offered in the range of 655.500 to 680.375 MHz (TV channels 44-49), with an operational range in excess of 300 feet. Receivers may be linked to form a complete system in which the built-in IntelliScan capability can automatically determine and set the best available frequencies on all linked receivers, minimizing interference and intermodulation. IntelliScan allows the sound designer to build an entire frequency plan quickly and easily without using traditional frequency charts, books, or even web sites. This becomes especially important if guest talent has brought their own wireless system, or the theatre is located in an ever-changing, high-traffic audio environment. An AC pass-through system allows multiple receivers to be powered using only one outlet. Receivers also include Ethernet ports, enabling monitoring of system parameters via the included PC software. By using standard low cost, “off the shelf” Ethernet hardware, cables, and router, the sound designer has the ability for remote control of the entire wireless system from a PC. This provides instant access from the sound booth to assign names to receivers, monitor RF and audio levels, check battery life, and perform frequency scans and walkout tests.

Martin Audio W8LM Mini Line Array

Martin Audio has unveiled the W8LM Mini Line Array, a compact and lightweight three-way system combining line array design and horn loading techniques to produce smooth, consistent sound with maximum dynamic impact. The versatile and scalable, three-way, active/passive W8LM system can be flown or ground stacked for corporate events, theatres, and indoor venues where space is at a premium.

Despite its compact dimensions (24.4"W × 9.57"H × 15.7"D) and reduced weight (53lbs.), the W8LM is a full-bandwidth, 2 × 8" and 2 × 1" system that can be used without additional sub-bass. Using proven array principles from its larger predecessors, coupled with an evolution of the Hybrid loading technique, the system achieves a low/mid output with sensitivity greater than 100dB, rising to 106dB for the HF. The use of mid-horn geometry and toroidal wave-guide allows the W8LM to maintain a constant directivity with a horizontal pattern control of over 120• (700Hz-18kHz), ensuring no tonal imbalances off axis.

The captive, rapid deployment rigging system allows inter-cabinet angles of 0-7.5• to be set as a flown or ground-stacked system as determined by the Viewpoint array optimization software. As all cabinets are hinged at the front, the spacing between adjacent elements remains the same irrespective of splay angles, ensuring smooth vertical dispersion and the continuation of all the Line Array principles.

Fully integrated electro-acoustic systems with all elements optimized deliver superior fidelity and coverage. The basic building blocks in the Renkus-Heinz PN and PNX Series of line arrays, the unique design of the PN102/LA and PNX102/LA allows line arrays of all sizes to be simply assembled and quickly installed safely and securely.

The Isophasic Plane Wave Generator is the key to the performance of the PN102/LA and PNX102/LA line array loudspeakers. Path Length Equalization Technology produces a flat high-frequency wavefront that couples coherently to assure true line-array performance. The speakers' unique diffractor baffle provides mid-range diffraction loading, eliminating mid range narrowing of the horizontal dispersion to provide consistent wide-angle coverage across the entire frequency range. A unique two-point hardware system provides easy assembly with metal-to-metal reliability and safety permits both ground stacking and flying.

Cadac D20 Digital Input Mix Matrix

Cadac has unveiled the D20 Digital Input Mix Matrix, which provides the technology platform for Cadac's development of a full-scale integrated digital console. The D20 provides a reliable digital engine ideally suited for operation as a standalone audio processor for smaller-scale performances or as an expansion mixer for existing analogue Cadac consoles. The D20 is equipped with 16 line level analogue inputs and outputs, working with 24-bit samples at a sample rate of 96kHz. Each channel provides 4-band parametric EQ, high and low pass filters, compression and gating dynamics control, plus adjustable level routing to 16 output mixes (Pre EQ, Post EQ or Post Fader). The D20 is designed for operation with Cadac's Sound Automation Manager (SAM) software. This enables users to create a virtual set of modules to reflect a traditional console layout, with the software “views” in turn providing live updates for real-time control of the D20 and operation of SAM's more conventional cue-based automation facilities. However, all the audio parameters can also be adjusted via the unit's front panel. In standalone mode, the D20 uses the SAM software to control external sounds effects generators via MIDI, and several D20s can be bussed together to provide additional inputs — for example, 32×16, 48×16 etc. As an expansion mixer, the D20 is equipped with a 37-way “D” type socket that permits connection into a console's audio bus to link the D20 directly into the console's sub group or matrix outputs. Multiple D20s can be used to expand the console's channel complement, in multiples of 16.

d&b audiotechnik Q Series Speakers

The new Q Series of loudspeakers from d&b audiotechnik uses a variety of technologies — conventional rotatable CD horns, dipolar driver arrangements, low compression vented designs with high excursion drivers, and toroidal wave shaping de-vices — all integrated together using line array principals. The application scope ranges from single loudspeakers right through to larger multiple cabinet arrays in locations which all share the same fundamental requirements: acoustical and mechanical compatibility to achieve precise control of directivity and maintain this to the lowest possible frequency. Ideally suited to situations where multiple open microphones are used and considerable gain before feedback is an absolute requirement, it is especially appropriate for live theatre and orchestral shows. The Q Series has a full range of specially designed rigging fittings to allow quick and simple deployment in all applications, whether ground supported or thrown, while the use of neodymium magnets in the driver assemblies increases the ratio of weight against output to higher levels.

TerraSonde Analysts Firmware Module

The Analysts Firmware module from TerraSonde brings three sophisticated measurements within the reach of any Audio Toolbox owner: Multi-Band RT60, STIpa and TDA. The module installs on the Audio Toolbox and includes all of the measurements from TerraSonde's Con-tractors firmware module as well.

TerraSonde offers a custom multi-band RT60 measurement as the first new tool in the suite. The user is able to read 8 different RT60 times from a single burst of wide-band pink noise. This enables a room to be analyzed for RT60 times in minutes as opposed to hours. The results are provided in real-time and can be saved to memory for plotting and reporting.

STIpa is a new speech intelligibility standard developed to more closely correlate with the Speech Intelligibility Index. STI-PA, which stands for STI for Public Address, is a measurement in which seven different frequency bands are analyzed simultaneously within a specific pink noise waveform. The result is expressed in a “score” which is indicative of the amount of speech intelligibility from that position. The process takes place in real-time on the Toolbox.

TDA is TerraSonde's version of time delay spectrometry, which measures transducer performance and room acoustics using a noise-immune method. In layman's terms, this allows both accurate measurement of speakers, without coloration from room reflections, and accurate measurement of room response. Used in conjunction with a special version TerraLink, users can create and print 3-D waterfall graphs of reverb decay vs. frequency. They will also be able to visually see room modes and uneven decay responses.
