20TH ANNUAL IALD AWARDS

At its 20th annual international awards program during Lightfair, the IALD honored 16 international lighting design projects for outstanding architectural lighting design achievement. This year, 163 entries from 11 countries were submitted. The judges bestowed one special citation, 11 awards of merit, and four awards of excellence. The award of excellence winner with the highest point score was then awarded the new IALD Radiance Award for Excellence in Architectural Lighting Design, commissioned by famed designer Ingo Maurer.

The Radiance Award was presented to Steven Rosen, IALD, of Available Light located in Salem, MA, and Katherine Abernathy, IALD, for their work on the MIT Building 7 Renovation, an MIT landmark. The three other IALD Awards of Excellence were: the Solar Light Pipe in Washington DC, by Carpenter/Norris Consulting in New York City; Chung-Tai Chan Temple in Pu-Li, Na-Tou County, Taiwan, by CWI Lighting Design in Taipei, Taiwan; and the School of the International Center of Photography in New York City, by Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design of New York City.

Eleven IALD Awards of Merit were presented for: the M39/40 twin office buildings in Taipei, Taiwan, by Architectural Lighting Design Inc. in Taipei; ERCO P3 Warehouse in Nordrhein Westfalen, Germany, by Belzner Holmes Architektur Licht Bühne in Heidelberg, Baden Württenberg, Germany; the facade and show illumination of the Golden Moon Hotel & Casino in Philadelphia, MS, by Brilliant Lighting Design in Miami, FL; Korean Development Bank in Seoul, South Korea, by Fisher Marantz Stone of New York; Deutsch Inc. in Los Angeles, CA, by Arc Light Design in New York; Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, TN, by Brandston Partnership of New York; the South Court of the New York Public Library in New York, NY, by Fisher Marantz Stone; Magna Science Adventure Centre in Templeborough, Rotherham, United Kingdom, by Speirs and Major Associates located in London and Edinburgh; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in Fort Worth, TX, by George Sexton Associates of Washington, DC; First Presbyterian Church, Evanston, IL, by Schuler & Shook in Chicago, IL; and the Minneapolis Convention Center Expansion, also by Schuler & Shook.

Also, a Special Citation for energy efficiency was awarded for the Symantec corporate offices, Springfield, OR, by Benya Lighting Design of West Linn, OR.
