2008 Master Classes Announced

Tony Award-winning lighting designer Jules Fisher and sound designer Abe Jacob return as creative consultants for the critically acclaimed Broadway Lighting Master Classes (BLMC) and Broadway Sound Master Classes (BSMC), to be held at NYU the week of May 16 to 22, with a special Projection Master Classes component on May 19 at XL LED Lab.

“We are very pleased to renew our association with NYU, both the Tisch School of the Arts and the Skirball Center,” says David Johnson, associate publisher and editorial director of Live Design. “We are also excited to hold the Projection Master Classes in the cutting-edge environment of the new XL LED Lab, where the latest in LED technology is showcased. Our thanks go to XL for hosting the Classes.”

Now in its 14th year, the BLMC includes three days of intensive courses focused on the art and science of professional theatre lighting design, held at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Fisher leads a faculty that includes Peggy Eisenhauer, Kevin Adams, Christopher Akerlind, Howell Binkley, Beverly Emmons, Donald Holder, Vivien Leone, Clifton Taylor, and projection designer Wendall K. Harrington.

The BLMC, produced by Live Design, also includes a manufacturers' showcase in the Eisner Lubin Auditorium at NYU's Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, upstairs from the Skirball Center. Leading manufacturers of lighting technology will display products on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 20 and 21.

The Projection Master Classes component at the XL LED Lab includes a one-day seminar exploring LED video and digital lighting, from creative design applications to in-depth technology presentations. Participating faculty include Patrick Dierson (Artfag, Performance Environment Design), Joshua Fleitell (Scharff Weisberg), Thomas Hague (programmer), Lars Pederson (Scharff Weisberg), Bruce Rodgers (Tribe Design), and David Taylor (Arup). The day concludes with a networking cocktail party.

The sixth annual BSMC, held at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, provides attendees with an in-depth exploration of trends in Broadway sound design and reinforcement. Jacob leads a faculty of professionals covering theatrical sound design, optimization and reinforcement, working with digital audio consoles, and more. Faculty includes Jonathan Deans, Peter Hylenski, Rob Milburn, Michael Bodine, Dan Moses Schreier, and Steve Sockey (SIA Associates). Technical sessions will be presented by Chris Hubbard (CH Sound Design), Henry Cohen, John Taylor (d&b Audiotechnik), and Meyer Sound. The BSMC is produced by Live Design in conjunction with the Tisch School of the Arts.

Both the BSMC and BLMC include a ticket to a Broadway show, with a post-show discussion in the theatre and a critique of the design the next day in the Classes.
