Sure, everyone talks about the big flashy lights, the space age consoles, the sleek new speakers; they get all the headlines, not to mention advertising budgets. But every designer and technician knows that at that critical moment in a show when the wheels are in danger of falling off, it's the little gadget you have in your pocket, key chain, or toolbox that ends up saving your sweet behind. Well, to be honest, we forgot. See, we started this section called “Widgets We Love” several years ago, and the response was great, so we kept it up for a few years. But, we took it for granted. It was great and all, but there were other fish in the sea — media servers, digital consoles, LED this and that — and we moved on. But you know what, it was wrong. We knew where our heart lay. And so we stand here, hat in hand, begging for forgiveness, little widget. To make it up to you, we offer this roundup of some new doo-dads, do-hickeys, and thingamabobs no self-respecting gearhead should be without.

The dmxLAN System offers the conversion of DMX to Ethernet and back, and allows complete network management through PC or Pocket PC software. All the functionality of an Ethernet basic network, like switches for multiple access point or wireless LAN, are supported. It also supports all the functionalities of new and future RDM and ACN/BCN protocols.

“A free software package is linked to ELC Lighting's Node4 Art-Net node. The software package consists of a visualizer for WYSIWYG to pre-program shows and dmXLAN to program nodes. With the visualizer, if the Node4 is connected to DMX lines and the user's PC (standard Ethernet, with WIFI access wireless connection is possible), users can check on fixtures during the show. For example, if your job is to keep all the fixtures running and one shutter is closed, you can check if it is an operator or fixture error. The dmXLAN software has many features, like three types of merge-HTP, LTP, and Custom merge-and channel per channel merging and patching. Custom merge allows users to merge two lines into one (individual for each output), with an offset for both of the merged lines. This eliminates the need for complicated patches in the desk. dmXLAN also allows users to create the same patch as in the desk. Users can isolate and control fixtures from their laptop or PC. Arrange the fixtures' bitmaps in the plan view, then select the fixture to control (in patch view or plan view) and choose “control”; now the user controls the fixture. This feature is very useful for testing without a desk, and if running wireless, users can test the fixtures with a laptop or PDA near the fixture through its standard data lines. Users can configure and monitor all nodes on the network and monitor all DMX universes. There is a full data log, and there are also macros for Reset and Lamp On/Off, so users don't have to ask the operator again and again to reset a fixture. More functions are Highlight, Lock Fixtures, etc. When I go to a job, a Node4, a WIFI AP, and my laptop are standard things in my car!”

WHY WE LOVE IT:

GT 3100 GAM CHEK is a 3-in-1 electrical tester with cable, lamp, and circuit tests. The cable test monitors line continuity and shows completed circuits. Lamp test indicates the lamp and fixture continuity. Circuit tester checks available power, if polarity is correct, and if wiring is correct.

MUTUAL HARDWARE THE HANDLE
The Handle fits onto an existing bolt found on pipe clamps, eliminating the need for a wrench. It is secured through the bolt, so it cannot be knocked off.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
“My favorite widget is The Handle from Mutual Hardware. It is presently ‘out-of-manufacturing’ and I hope by expressing interest here we can get this back into production. I am the in-house LD at two local arenas; I do special effects and specialty lighting for a semi-pro hockey team, semi-pro arena football team, and the men's and women's basketball and gymnastics teams at the local university. As such, I am always moving instruments and effects around on the catwalks. Not carrying a wrench makes for less to drop on the deck (be it ice, turf, or gym floor). My crew also finds it easier to deal with the units, as they range from ETC Source Fours® with 19° lenses to those with 10° lenses, as well as those outfitted with City Theatrical EFX Plus2 large-format projectors and the occasional confetti/streamer cannons and pyrodistro boxes.
