L-Acoustics Debuts Compact Self-Powered Subwoofer

L- Acoustics recently unveiled its compact SB15P subwoofer designed to serve as a companion low-frequency device for the company’s new P Series (108P and 112P) self-powered coaxial loudspeakers. Featuring a front-loaded 15-inch transducer loaded in an optimized sized/tuned vented enclosure, the SB15P pairs the convenience of self-powered performance with the benefits of digital signal processing.

Ideal for portable sound reinforcement or stage monitoring, the SB15P provides ‘plug-and-play’ ease of operation given its robust 1000-watt (continuous, 8 ohms) Class D amplifier module and dedicated onboard DSP with application-engineered presets.

The system’s 15-inch component features elevated power handling and excursion capability along with reduced distortion and thermal power compression. This advanced component performance, combined with the SB15P’s integral power amplification and sophisticated protection circuitry, enables the subwoofer to deliver exceptional SPL output and highly reliable operation. Furthermore, optimized tuning provides an ideal combination of temporal accuracy, bass articulation, musicality, and low-end definition that only a front-loaded subwoofer can provide.

The compact dimensions (17.5" H x 20.5" W x 20.5" D) and low profile of the SB15P provide a high degree of flexibility for installations where space is at a premium. Typical applications include portable distributed sound reinforcement for theatres, concert halls, nightclubs, tradeshows, corporate A/V, houses of worship, conference rooms, multimedia installs and television studio environments. Featuring an operating bandwidth of 45 to 100Hz (± 3dB¬) with a useable low frequency of 40Hz (-10dB), the SB15P is also ideal for stage monitoring applications, such as compact side-fill or keyboard and drum-fill monitoring. For studio or nearfield monitoring, the SB15P can be used with 108P enclosures in stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 configurations.

A built-in pole mount socket is provided as standard, facilitating the creation of a compact FOH system when the SB15P is used with 108P or 112P enclosures. An adjustable U bracket is available as an optional rigging accessory (for ceiling, wall, scaffold or truss mounting), adding a unique degree of rigging versatility for fixed installation.

The cabinet, finished with a highly-resilient maroon-gray paint, is constructed of 18mm Baltic birch and internally braced with steel corner plates and joints that are sealed, screwed and rabbeted in order to remain free of vibration at extreme SPLs. Weighing just under 80 pounds, the enclosure features two recessed grips on the sides for handling.

The rear panel sports two parallel XLR input connectors with a rotary gain pot, PowerCon AC power connectors with a slider switch for 115V or 220V operation, and four push buttons for accessing the application-engineered DSP presets (crossover filtering and system EQ). A black powder-coated 1.5mm steel grille covered with an acoustically transparent grille cloth protects the front of the enclosure.
