Tinc Design & Production Stages And Lights Ethel's Wait For Green In Lush, Lavish Splendor At The Winter Garden

EthelThis past December 19th" staging and lighting company Tinc Design & Productions crafted a sultry lighting design to play host to exuberant post-classical string ensemble Ethel's collaboration with choreographer Annie-B Parson in Wait for Green.

Housed within the divine 10-story, 2,000-glass-paned, 10,000 square foot Winter Garden within the World Financial Center, this dynamic interplay of dance-upon-music-upon-dance had warranted a poignant contrast between inside and outside.

According to Tinc lighting designer Lance Darcy, this meant a very elegant "warmth and inclusion versus the snowy-cold out-of-doors. And so, our choices were not to be about flashy templates or crazy elements. Our color choices were simple. Patterns were not going to work."

The tremendous mechanical challenge was working within a room laden with 100,000 holiday lights, with all dimmers being used. The living-room-fashioned set, situated beneath a palm canopy, meant that all lighting had to be imported.

"We didn't have a lot of time in which to workshop the piece," explains Darcy. "We were afforded only one day of technical rehearsal. The project took a lot of preplanning and conceptual discussion. We really had to think it through."

Another pressure brought about by these conditions was that the fleet couldn't test very much. "Also, we were using spaces that are not usually where performances are, and are not usually lit," he notes. "It was comforting that Annie-B Parson, the choreographer and director, was very easy to work with. We were really on the same page, conceptually!"

arts>World Financial Center produced and commissioned the work in celebration of their 20th Anniversary. Elysa Marden is the program's Production Director, and Allan Abrams the Technical Director. Production electrician Zoe "Where" Huertas of Tinc was on hand, as was the TKO crew.
