Scharff Weisberg Makes A Sound Decision

dbScharff Weisberg has continued to expand and update its equipment inventory with the purchase of Q-Series Line Array speaker systems from d&b audiotechnik.

"The Q-Series are flexible, scalable loudspeakers which can be effortlessly combined to create a multitude of small to large coherent arrays," says Director of Audio Services, David Lynd. "They are ideal for applications featuring numerous open microphones and where considerable gain before feedback is required for speech and music."

The Q-Series combines a variety of technologies with remarkable results and maintains the maxims of the d&b system reality. The speakers have conventional rotatable CD horns, dipolar driver arrangements, low- compression vented designs with high-excursion drivers, and toroidal wave-shaping devices, all integrated together using line array principles. The exceptional Q factor symbolizes the precise dispersion control to very low frequencies. Additionally, the Q-Series produces surprisingly high sound-pressure levels for its size and weight.

The speakers also have a full range of specially-designed rigging fittings to allow quick and simple deployment in all applications, whether ground supported or flown; the use of neodymium magnets in the driver assemblies increases the ratio of weight against output to higher levels.

The d&b speakers were hardly out of the box before they were deployed on a project for client EDNY marking the 150th anniversary of Monumental Life Insurance. Sha-Na-Na performed for the celebration, which was held at the Baltimore Waterfront Marriott. The D&B line arrays were flown left and right of downstage to support the general session. "I was quite surprised at the ease of rigging this system and the fantastic quality of speech reproduction with our new line array," added Scharff Weisberg's Guy Bostian. "The room was packed with over 1000 people and, at 175' deep and 110 feet wide, the system carried clean crisp audio with no dead space in the room whatsoever. Not even a hint of feedback was present due to the tremendous drop-off behind the cabinets."

"Scharff Weisberg's expanding inventory, along with our celebrated crew, are more prepared than ever to support customers' staging, corporate and broadcast needs," Lynd concludes.
