Philips Vari-Lite VLX Wash luminaires are proving to be a fashion must-have as they worked the catwalk at this year’s Clothes Show Live in Birmingham.
ELP supplied the VLX fixtures to lighting designer Nigel Catmur who is well known for his work on major awards ceremonies such as the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize, The Royal Variety and the West End and Global Touring Smash Hit Thriller Live. Catmur says he specified the VARI-LITE VLX Wash due to their stunning colors and intensity which can hold their own amid the LED walls and projections.
“I picked the VLX Wash as they have always been a firm favorite in my arsenal for the last few years,” says Catmur. “They are phenomenally bright with great colors and a zoom range that makes them a beam light as well as brilliant wash. On this occasion, I only had five in the rig, but they still kick through becoming the lamp of the gig in many scenes.”
The highlight of the show, at Birmingham’s NEC, was a 45-minute catwalk performance featuring the latest fashion collections, which packed in 350 outfits, eight scene changes and dozens of models and dancers. With scenes ranging from ‘beach’, ‘office’, ‘high street’, ‘Sicily', ‘music video’ and ‘after-show-party’, each change provided an opportunity for a different lighting look and of course an accompanying clothing collection.
The event featured a LED floor and wall, projections, and the VLX Wash luminaires which are becoming widely respected for their smooth, natural color mixing free of color shadowing effects associated with other LED fixtures.
Additionally, the VLX wash offers a dynamic CRI adjustment, a continuously adjustable color temperature white range between approximately 3000 and 9000 Kelvin, and seamless color mixing that all combine to create a single source that behaves like familiar arc or tungsten luminaires without the associated costs and inefficiencies inherent in those systems.
