Coemar Lights Up Robin Williams “Weapons of Self-Destruction” HBO Special

Robin WilliamsWhen Robin Williams taped his HBO special, "Weapons of Self-Destruction," at Washington, D.C.'s DAR Constitution Hall a large complement of Coemar lighting fixtures were also in the house. The special, which marked the culmination of Williams's sold-out US tour, is the comedian's fifth HBO stand up special and his first solo TV concert since July 2002.

Atomic Lighting, a full-service production lighting company based in Lititz, PA, furnished 44 Coemar Infinity Wash XLs and 24 Infinity ACLs to lighting designer Tom Beck for the taping.

"Except for Robin's key lighting, we used all automated lights for this show," says Beck. "The Infinity Wash XLs highlighted the set, which included a background of royal blue curtains, that was diffused by camouflage netting, and five large LED screens on stage with custom show content. The fixtures proved to be very bright and rich with great colors."

With so much more than just superior brightness to their name, Coemar Infinity Wash XL lights sport a groundbreaking new color mix system able to achieve CMY and RGB colors (CMY patent pending). There's also an effects wheel for creating texture and aerial effects with wash light (patent pending) as well as a beam shaper rotating and indexing at 360 degrees (patent pending).

Beck also used Coemar's new ACL for the first time. The Infinity ACL S is renowned for its superior brightness, offering more brightness than a 1200W fixture in a 250W package. Other key features include variable beam size and beam control with rotating aerial effects; moon flower effect; split color beam effects; and CMY color mixing.

"I hung the ACLs on the spot bridge and used them for graphics for cross shots, on the trusses at the sides of the venue and to back light people in the lower seating," he explains. "They were a real hit. The ACLs are not a huge fixture but come off like big lights. I really liked them."

Overall, Beck was pleased with the Coemar fixtures' ability to light the scenery and audience for the HBO special. "I'm quite happy with their performance," he reports.

At Atomic Lighting Brad Hafer is vice president of sales/design.
