Live Design Exclusive: Focus Lighting At Koi Restaurant

Focus Lighting, Inc. - NYC recently completed work on Koi Restaurant, located in Bryant Park Hotel in midtown Manhattan. The team at Focus Lighting, Inc.–principal designer Paul Gregory, LD Michael Cummings, assistant LD Emily Pan, and project manager Dan Nichols–collaborated with designers at ICRAVE Design Studio to create the Asian inspired restaurant.

The main challenge for the design team was adapting the design concept to the existing space, as the client wanted minimal renovations. In order to accomplish this, Focus Lighting added elements independent of the space without changing the integral architecture. For instance, custom glowing chandeliers hang over the main dining space. Each chandelier is made up of individual "fish scale" pieces of orange glass, internally illuminated with LEDs. Focus Lighting cross lit the lattice pattern on the ceiling with surface-mounted fixtures to decrease the volume of the space and draw guests eyes into the restaurant. Tables are also individually lit with pin-spot downlights hidden between the lattice structures on the ceiling.

Lighting used for the space includes a Lutron Grafik Eye 3000 Dimming System, 40 CSL recessed MR16 pinspots for low ceiling table accents; 21 Edison Price Darklight recessed Par36 adjustable downlights for high ceiling table accents; 21 Edison Price Darklight recessed BiPins for the sushi bar graphic wall wash; 12 Nulux Washlux recessed 2-MR16 Lensed Wallwash for the Koi graphic at the back wall; 54 Lumiere surface mount adjustable three-head MR16 accents for uplight and ceiling; a custom chandelier manufactured by Focus Lighting and ICRAVE Design; and a total of 164 Sylvania lamps.
