Entertainment Design Master Classes Expand

In keeping with needs of an expanding industry, The Broadway Lighting Master Classes and Broadway Sound Master Classes have morphed into The Entertainment Design Master Classes and expanded to include the first-ever Projection Master Classes, with award-winning projection designer Wendall K. Harrington serving as creative consultant.

The combined classes will be held June 20-24, 2005 in a new location, The Tribeca Performing Arts Center at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (at the corner of Greenwich Street and Chambers Street) in lower Manhattan.

"Entertainment technology is changing, so it’s important that both young and established designers stay ahead of the curve," says David Johnson, editorial director/associate publisher of Entertainment Design, Lighting Dimensions and SRO. "As a result, we’re changing too, creating the umbrella name of the Entertainment Design Master Classes and adding our first ever Projection Master Classes. We’re also moving into an exciting new venue at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, which will allow us to better serve our sponsors and attendees. Add to that the always top-notch sessions put together by Jules Fisher for the BLMC and Abe Jacob for the BSMC, as well as the annual EDDY Awards, and you have the industry’s most comprehensive week of training available, all at a new, more affordable three-tier pricing structure."

"There isn’t a word to describe the kind of growth that the use of projection is experiencing," says Harrington. "Image is everywhere, and products of every kind are flooding the marketplace. Clearly, it’s time to assemble, take a look at where we came from, where we are headed, and the most elegant way to get there. Join this landmark gathering and be a part of the future of entertainment design." She will lead a faculty of projection professionals including: programmer Paul Vershbow, Sage M. Carter on "Getting The Image To The Screen," Mary Racine on "Finding the Image, Research and Copyright," and Peter Scharff, chairman of Scharff Weisberg.

The Projection Master Classes will take place on June 23 and 24, with a technical showcase of cutting-edge projection technology at Scharff Weisberg in Long Island City. The Projection Master Classes have been designed to offer insight into designing projection for live events, with special emphasis on the convergence of lighting, sets, and projection in theatre and concerts.

The 11th Broadway Lighting Master Classes (BLMC) will take place on June 20-22, with Tony Award-winning lighting designer Jules Fisher once again serving as creative consultant and head of the faculty. A roster of leading lighting designers including Peggy Eisenhauer, Beverly Emmons, Vivien Leone, Donald Holder, Brian MacDevitt, and Clifton Taylor will participate. Fisher will also host a panel of top scenic designers to address the issues of collaboration and convergence of design disciplines.

The Third Annual Broadway Sound Master Classes (BSMC) will take place on June 22-24, with legendary sound designer Abe Jacob in the driver’s seat. A faculty of top sound professionals will explore the current trends in theatre sound design and reinforcement–from the artistic process to new technology. In addition to Jacob, speakers include Jonathan Deans, Peter Fitzgerald, Peter Hylenski, Sam Berkow on "Tuning The System," Larry Estrin on "The Really Big Show and Communications," and an in-depth discussion of the sound design for the new Broadway musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

All attendees will attend a Broadway musical or other performance event, followed by an in-depth critique. They are invited to attend the 13th Annual EDDY Awards on Wednesday, June 22 at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. The EDDYs are presented to industry leaders for outstanding contributions in the field of entertainment design and technology. Product awards for outstanding technical development are also presented.

"We’re extremely excited to offer such a comprehensive package of training to the industry," says Johnson. "And we can’t wait to see you in beautiful New York City in June."
